Today is my birthday
Birthday’s have always been kind of a big deal to me. It’s a day that brings up a lot of emotions of the past and dreams for the future. I can distinctly remember my birthday in 2007 – I was in the San Francisco Bay Area, sitting at a café by myself. The weather was grey, cool and a little foggy, and the trees were bare, their leaves already fallen and blown away. This was far from the sunny and blue spring days I was used to in Australia as summer neared in late November when my birthday came around each year. It was not long before Thanksgiving and most of my friends had already left town to spend time with their families, or were busy preparing for their family celebrations. My family was thousands of miles away. I was coming down with something. As I sat alone in that café, it just didn’t feel like my birthday at all, and on that day I vowed that in the future my birthday would be different – and that began the tradition of traveling somewhere for my birthday each year. I was determined to make my own celebration – no matter how far from family, or what the weather was in the place where we lived.
